About Public Works and Wastewater

Public Works Portrait

The largest department in St. Charles Parish with more than 160 employees, the Department of Public Works operates diligently to ensure the streets, drainage and critical infrastructure are in order, which promotes a high quality of life for all residents. Public works consists of 10 divisions outlined below.

Wastewater maintains and operates all parish-owned sewerage facilities and properties, including the collection and treatment systems, buildings, more than 300 lift stations and over 300 miles of sewer lines. The department develops and operates a comprehensive wastewater system.

By performing routine maintenance and upgrades to the system's infrastructure, the department works to prevent public health hazards, unnecessary damage to public and private property and excessive expenditures for claims and legal fees. It also minimizes inconveniences to services, nuisance odors, energy consumption, infiltration and inflow. It strives to be efficient by using funds available for systems operations and eliminating plant shutdowns and discharge violations.
