WATCH THE LATEST PARISH PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Post Date:February 18, 2010

  • I would like to thank Councilman Cochran and Councilman Tastet for going to the Ormond Senior Citizens home to wish Virginia Harris a happy 102nd birthday. Harris the oldest living resident in St. Charles Parish.
  • Last week we held a meeting with grain elevators Bunge and ADM regarding elevated levels of dust in the area, along with Councilmen Tastet and Cochran. They say they are having issues around drying the grain due to the recent extreme wet weather. The drying process is taking longer, creating a larger amount of dust. We asked them to come up with a game plan on lowering or eliminating the dust emissions within the next two to three weeks.
  • The new courthouse gazebo will be dedicated on Feb. 11.
  • Parks and Recreation is now registering for Challenger Baseball. The deadline is Feb. 19.
  • Trash Bash is coming up on March 27. Even if you can't join us, please do what you can to clean up your own areas and properties. We can see that these events are really creating awareness in the community and keeping the roadways cleaner. It's also a great education for students, who are passing the message on to their parents.
  • Parish Info Tours will take place Feb. 27 and March 6. The tours are a great way to see what's going on in the parish and how your tax dollars are being spent. During this installment we'll be touring the Emergency Operations Center to find out what happens there during emergencies.
  • The sheriff sponsored a pre-Super Bowl tailgating party for everyone in the courthouse. He estimates about 169 people took part.
  • On the Saints' historic Super Bowl win: I'm 65 years old, and I've never been involved in anything like this. The energy is unreal. You're looking at people young, old; black, white; rich poor; different religious denominations. But we all came together for one purpose - To see our team go to victory. And I think if we can build on that momentum in the state, city and parish, there's a lot of things we can do. It just goes to show you what can happen when everyone pulls in the same direction. Don't ever forget the feeling you felt yesterday after this game - It's a great feeling.
