PRESIDENT REPORTS ON MARINE CLEANUP, RIVER REGION DAY AT CAPITOL

Post Date:June 30, 2011

In this report:

  • I'd like to thank all those who came out and helped as we attended the River Region Caucus legislative day last week at the state capitol. St. Charles, St. John and St. James Parishes were represented. We had the opportunity to sit down and talk with senate and house legislative members, and we were recognized during each session with resolutions. I'd also like to thank Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, who was gracious enough to let us have his apartment right next to the capitol to hold our function indoors. Our guest speaker was Sherri LeBas with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. She outlined some of the problems that local governments face and what she sees for the future because of budget cuts. I'd also like to thank Councilwoman Schexnaydre and Councilman Authement for attending, as well as District Attorney Harry Morel.

  • The Paradis Library grand opening was held on June 18 at 307 Audubon Street. It's a great addition to the community. The library actually opened a couple weeks ago, and there are about 70 to 80 people a day visiting it already. A lot of the patrons are using computers; there are 12 in the library now, and they're talking about getting more. Thanks go out to the Library Board and the Parish Council.

  • Two years ago the Coast Guard told us they were going to come into our waterways and take out sunken boats, trees and any other kind of debris. I got a report back that said in the following areas the following targets were removed: Des Allemands - 32; Bayou Gauche - 6; Lake Cataouatche - 2; Bayou Cuba - 7; Sellers Canal - 13; Providence Canal - 16; Eighty Arpent Canal - 4; St. Charles Canal - 1; and West Return Canal - 3.
