HAZARDOUS MATERIALS COLLECTION SHOWS RESULTS

Post Date:July 06, 2010
What is this event? HHCD '10
This event was held at two locations on May 22 in St. John the Baptist and St. Charles Parishes. The Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day  was sponsored (funding and employee volunteers) as a community service by 18 area manufacturers.

This was the 12th HHMCD collection event. A comparison of some past events is provided in table below. The purpose of the event is to provide households an opportunity to properly dispose or recycle materials that are inappropriate for curbside pickup. Materials such as solvents, poisons, used oil and corrosives require special handling to prevent safety and environmental impact.

Patrons of these events drove their vehicles to the collection centers where they were greeted and their cars were unloaded by volunteers. This year, 358 vehicles dropped off a total of 50,778 pounds of material. Of all material received, 53 percent was recycled or recovered. The event was staffed by 70 volunteers from the sponsor companies and other organizations.

What Were the Results?
At the end of the day, tons of potentially harmful materials had been prepared for recycling, recovery, treatment or disposal. The table below gives the totals for HMCD since it started in 1998. The numbers are the sum of both collection locations.
