Position Summary:
The Grass Cutter II, under general supervision, follows policies and procedures while also having the ability to make suggestions and improvements to those policies and procedures, performs semi-skilled work in the safe operation of light and/or medium weight grass cutting equipment, specifically a side-arm tractor and maybe a bush hog. This position follows general directions and plans own time to meet predetermined schedules. The work involves some moderate risks or discomforts and requires some physical exertion.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Responsible for cutting grass from parish line to parish line.
Responsible for cutting grass, weed eating, and trimming trees on parish right of ways and servitudes.
Assist road crew with filling and putting out sandbags.
Navigating around hazardous conditions and such as gas lines, power lines, water lines, cars on roadways, pedestrians, mailboxes, culverts and cutting around driveways.
Operation of light, medium and/or heavy weight grass cutting equipment such as a side arm tractor, bush hog, zero turn mower, weed eater. May also operate pickup truck with trailer if needed.
Adjusting equipment as needed for specialized operational needs.
Providing routine and minor maintenance to equipment; checks gas, oil, hydraulic fluids, and other lubricant levels and/or sharpens blades as needed.
Reporting mechanical difficulties to the appropriate personnel for repairs.
Washing and/or steam cleaning equipment used in daily work routine; assists in minor equipment maintenance; and performs minor repair work such as fixing flat tires on the tractor or similar equipment.
Assisting with keeping work areas clean, swept and in orderly condition.
Performing manual tasks that may include removing trees, roots and stumps; cutting weeds by hand; trimming trees; refueling vehicles/equipment; directing traffic while vehicle/equipment is stopped; setting up or removing safety cones; repairing sidewalks, roads, and driveways as needed.
Following all safety policies and procedures to ensure safe operations when completing tasks.
May supervise laborers at times.

Competencies:
Knowledge of basic range of concepts, principles, and practices in the occupation and skill in applying this knowledge to perform specialized work assignments.
Considerable knowledge of characteristics, operating procedures, and maintenance of machines and grass cutting equipment.
Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions in the operation of grass cutting equipment.
Knowledge of and experience complying with safety principles, practices, and procedures.
Working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations related to the operation and occupational hazards of light and/or medium grass cutting equipment.
Ability to operate and maintain light and/or medium grass cutting equipment skillfully, safely and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations.
Ability to perform physical labor required of the position.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing while understanding and following instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey and exchange information.
Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Education and Experience:
1-2 Years of experience in the operation of light, medium and/or heavy grass cutting equipment OR equivalent combination of experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
High school diploma or GED

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Louisiana Class “E” driver’s license

Work Environment:
The primary duties of this position are performed outdoors.

Physical Requirements:
Work involves moderate risks or discomforts and requires physical exertion. Must be physically able to operate a variety of gasoline and diesel equipment to include a side-arm grass tractor, bush hog, etc. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work.
